| Paul Barbarin was known as one
of New Orleans' finest early drummers. Born on May 5, 1899, Barbarin developed
his reputation as a first-call drummer as a teenager in the Young Olympia
Brass Band. In 1917, Barbarin left for Chicago, playing with a variety
of musicians, including Jimmie
Noone and Freddie Keppard.
Thus began a series of New Orleans to Chicago trips that kept Barbarin
busy, picking up work as both cities flourished as jazz meccas. Another
return trip from the Big Easy to Chicago included a stint with King
Oliver's band, the Dixie Syncopators. |
