JAZZ ME NEWS SACRAMENTO 2002 SUPPLEMENT

FRIENDS OF RIVERWALK JAZZ SPONSOR NATION-WIDE RADIO BROADCAST OF 2002 SACRAMENTO JAZZ JUBILEE

Sacramento
Jazz Jubilee 2002Classic Jazz is alive and well mostly because of festivals staged all across the country. The Sacramento Jazz Jubilee held annually on Memorial Day Weekend--and the model for jazz festivals for over 29 years--once again invited The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and Riverwalk Jazz to record nine fabulous shows for national broadcast this summer.

Crest TheatreThe taping sessions will take place in downtown Sacramento during the Jubilee on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25 at the beautifully restored Crest Theatre. The site that the Crest Theatre sits on has housed a theater since 1912, starting with the Empress, a vaudeville theater which opened in 1913. The second, The Hippodrome, was originally a vaudeville house which converted to a motion picture theater in the late 1920s. In 1946, the Hippodrome interior was demolished and the Crest was built inside the Hippodrome building shell. The theater showcased films for thirty years until it closed in 1979. In 1986, the theater was re-opened, and in 1995 received a one million dollar restoration featuring a fabulous gold leaf Art Deco interior, bringing Sacramento's last picture palace back to its glittery 1940s appearance.
